Mediterranean forest - questions and answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Halakha, law, ecology, and practicalities - everything people ask.

Halakha

Is there a problem with planting a tree above the grave?
No, as long as the tree is not a fruit tree. Palestine Oak and Terebinth are not fruit-bearing trees in the Halakhic sense, and planting them in honor of the deceased is permitted and even meritorious.
What about Kohanim and ritual impurity?
The laws of ritual impurity apply to Yaar Ad as they do to any cemetery. A Kohen may not enter the forest itself. Boundaries are clearly marked at all entrances.

Legal & Rights

Who manages the cemetery?
A dedicated Public Benefit Company established for this purpose, supervised by the Ministry of Religious Services under the Alternative Civil Burial Law.
What happens to the forest in 100 years?
A permanent restrictive covenant registered in the Land Registry prevents any change of land use forever. The land is legally more protected than any traditional cemetery.
Does National Insurance cover the burial?
Yes, for residents buried in their local district. Other burials are funded directly by the family, typically at a lower cost than premium traditional burial.

Practical

How do you find the grave as the forest grows?
Every grave receives precise GPS coordinates permanently stored in the digital registry. The app guides visitors directly to the correct tree - even after decades.
What if there are no descendants to visit?
A dedicated public trust ensures the forest is maintained forever. 20% of every plot sale is deposited in a restricted endowment fund for perpetual forest care.

Ecology

Does green burial contaminate groundwater?
No. The calcareous-clayey soils of the Judean Foothills act as a natural barrier for decomposition fluids. The DRASTIC aquifer vulnerability index for this region is among the lowest in Israel. Yaar Ad is committed to groundwater monitoring from opening day.
What about PFAS and toxins?
Modern bodies contain PFAS in 97% of the population. Yaar Ad monitors this issue with full transparency and will publish findings. To date, no evidence of material harm from green burial in alkaline soil exists.
Are the burial trees carbon sinks?
Yes. A mature Palestine Oak absorbs 12-22 kg CO₂ per year. 3,000 trees = 36-66 metric tons CO₂ annually. By comparison, conventional burial in a coffin with a concrete headstone emits 150-300 kg CO₂ per person.

Safety & Longevity

What happens if a wildfire breaks out in the forest?
Yaar Ad operates in three protection circles: First circle — Active prevention: An annual fire management plan including preventive trimming at site perimeters, controlled burns in buffer zones, and ongoing coordination with the fire department and civil defense. Second circle — Insurance and restoration: Every plot is insured. A tree damaged by fire entitles the family to a replacement tree planted within 12 months at no cost. Third circle — Permanence beyond the tree: Precise GPS coordinates of every grave are registered in the Land Registry and a government database. Even if no tree remains — the location is known, marked, and legally protected forever.
What if our specific tree dies?
Yaar Ad is committed to the "Tree Warranty": • A tree that dies from natural causes (disease, drought, pests) — will be replaced with a new tree adjacent to the original grave site within one year. • A tree that is damaged but alive — will be treated by a certified forest gardener. • The grave is defined by GPS coordinates, not the tree. The tree is the living symbol — the legal boundary is the earth itself.
Will the app still work in 50 years?
A perfectly legitimate question. That's why Yaar Ad is built on four independent layers: 1. Physical metal marker — fixed in the ground near each tree. Needs no electricity, internet, or company. 2. Land Registry (Tabu) — precise coordinates registered on each plot's deed. A state document, not a company document. 3. Open WGS84 standard — the same standard used by Google Maps, Waze, and the IDF. These coordinates can be read by any map, anytime, independent of Yaar Ad as an organization. 4. Trust fund — 20% of every plot sale is deposited in a trust for maintenance. The money continues to serve even if the organization changes.
Who physically maintains the forest, and at whose expense?
The annual maintenance budget comes directly from the trust fund built from plot sale revenues. It includes: • Annual pruning and brush clearing • Tree health monitoring by a forest gardener • Access path and signage maintenance • GPS system and app updates The family is never required to fund anything beyond the plot purchase.
Can an elderly person or someone with mobility difficulty reach the tree?
Yes. The site is planned with mapped access paths from the parking area to every tree. Accessible paths (shallow slope gradient, stable surface) will be designed during the site engineering phase before opening. Each family will receive a dedicated access map to their tree, including distance and difficulty level.

Pricing

How much does a plot cost?
We're in the founder-round stage - pricing will be finalized when licensing is complete. Families who register now will receive founder terms. Contact us for details.
Does National Insurance cover it?
Yes, for residents buried in their area of residence. The National Insurance burial grant (approx. ₪12,000) will be recognized for plots in this project, subject to Ministry of Religious Affairs approval.
